EARTHQUAKE TIPS – LEARNING EARTHQUAKE DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

BMTPC and IIT Kanpur, launched the “IITK-BMTPC Series on Earthquake Tips” in early 2002. This publication, containing all the 32 Tips, updated in August 2015, is targeted at persons interested in building construction. The Tips cover topics such as basic introduction to earthquakes and terminology such as magnitude and intensity, concepts of earthquake resistant design, and aspects of a seismic design and construction of buildings. Utmost care is taken to ensure that despite complexity of the concepts, the Tips are simple and unambiguous. To ensure the highest quality of technical contents, every Tip is carefully reviewed by two or more experts, both within and outside India and their feedback is used before finalizing the Tips.

GUIDELINES FOR IMPROVING EARTHQUAKE RESISTANCE OF HOUSING

The publication on Improving Earthquake Resistance of Housing: Guidelines is the updated version of BMTPC’s earlier version with the same title which was brought out in 2001. However, since then lot of changes have taken place as regards the strategy of Indian subcontinent is concerned towards combating earthquake risk. The guidelines incorporate all the modifications being incorporated in Indian Standards. A separate annexure is added on Confined Masonry Technology as an alternative to the masonry construction reinforced at critical point being practiced in India for earthquake safe construction. This document would serve as an explanatory handbook on the various clauses of Indian Standards on Earthquakes which are important from the point of view of designing new buildings or improving resistance of existing building stock. The guidelines are in particular written keeping in mind that the major stock of buildings in India comprise of masonry buildings made up of mud burnt/un-burnt bricks and blocks & stones which are yet seldom designed for gravity and earthquake loads.

GUIDELINES FOR IMPROVING WIND CYCLONE RESISTANCE OF HOUSING

A long coast line of about 7500 km of flat terrain, shallow continental shelf and high population density makes the coastal areas of India extremely vulnerable to high velocity winds, moderate to high storm surges riding over astronomical tides and very heavy rains. The vulnerability of these areas to high sea waves became evident during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami which caused very heavy loss of lives in the state of Tamil Nadu and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. In view of increased vulnerabilities of the coasted areas, BMTPC brought out the revised publication “Guidelines for Improving Wind/Cyclone Resistance of Housing: 2010”. The guidelines have an added chapter on Cyclone cum Tsunami shelters design. This document would serve as an explanatory handbook on the various clauses of Indian Standards on Wind resistant design of new buildings or improving resistance of existing building stock.

GUIDELINES FOR IMPROVING FLOOD RESISTANCE OF HOUSING

The Guidelines on Improving Flood Resistance of Housing not only dwells upon the planning aspects of houses in flood prone areas but also on construction technologies to be adopted to make them safe in the event of inundation. The guidelines are written in simple and easy to understand language and can easily be implemented at field. The publication is the updated version of BMTPC’s earlier version of the guidelines. The information given in the guidelines would serve as a useful repository for all stakeholder involved in planning and rehabilitation of flood affected areas.

STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR COST EFFECTIVE INNOVATIVE BUILDING MATERIALS

BMTPC has brought out the Second Edition of its Book titled “Standards & Specifications for Cost-Effective Innovative Building Materials and Techniques including Rate Analysis”, which covers detailed specifications so formatted that these can be inducted in the schedules of specifications by public and private construction agencies. This publication contains standards and specification on 26 new building materials and construction techniques which have potential for large scale adoption and bringing down the cost of housing and building construction. Bureau of Indian Standards has formulated codes and standards on most of the new technologies included in the publication. It is hoped this compilation will help the construction agencies in promoting and adopting the new technologies in their housing and building projects.
